Plaid Pillow
To create the plaid pillow, you will need the following tools and materials:
6 Strands R10 red Persian yarn
40 Strands #733 blue Persian yarn
50 Strands #520 green Persian yarn
60 Strands #50 black Persian yarn
4 Strands #001 white Persian yarn
1 Skein #701 green DMC embroidery floss
1 Skein #666 red DMC embroidery floss
1 Skein #334 dark blue DMC embroidery floss
1 Skein #310 black DMC embroidery floss
1 Skein white DMC embroidery floss
15" X 15 1/2 14/1 Interlock canvas
#20 Tapestry needle
6" X 6" 18/1 Interlock canvas
#24 Tapestry needle
Embroidery hoop
Masking tape
1/2 Yard red velveteen
Red sewing thread
Marking pen
4 one-inch professional upholstery covered buttons
To Stitch
1. Bind all raw edges of the 14/1 canvas with masking tape.
2. Using Chottie's Plaid in two-strands Persian yarn, follow the count to stitch a 11" by 11 1/2" rectangle.
3. Stitch two rows of Continental on all for sides.
4. Block the needlepoint. It is imperative that plaid stripes be as straight as possible.
5. Bind all raw edges of the 18/1 canvas with masking tape.
6. Mark four 1 1/2" circles
7. Stitch Chottie's Plaid with six strand embroidery floss. It is best to stitch each button as though it were "placed" differently on the plaid.
8. Have an upholsterer finish the buttons for you.
9. Trim excess canvas on one of the 11" sides.
10. Cut a 1 1/2" by 12 1/2 rectangle strip of fabric.
11. Center the strip of fabric on the trimmed side of the needlepoint, matching right sides together.
12. Stitch the pieces together by machine.
13. Turn the raw edge of the fabric under the needlepoint. Stitch-in-the-ditch.
14. Cut a rectangle of fabric measuring 6" by 12 1/2".
15. Lay the fabric right side up. Place the needlepoint overlapping the fabric to create a 5/8" seam allowance. Again, stitch-in-the-ditch.
16. Cut a rectangle to measure 17 1/2" by 12 1/2".
17. Pin the needlepoint and fabric together and stitch. leaving an opening for turning.
18. Turn the needlepoint right sides out.
19. Stitch the buttons on the needlepoint.
20 Stuff and slip stitch your opening.
